Public Speaking Tips And Tricks | How To Pick A Topic For Your Next Seminar

While there are a lot of public speaking tips and tricks, I follow only three basic but essential rules. By limiting them to this number, they’re much easier to remember and apply. It’s also more convenient to keep track of your progress. You need public speaking tips and tricks for one good reason: it’s not enough you know how to speak. A lot of people mistakenly believe they can already come up on the stage and say whatever they want simply because they have a good command of their language. This is not the case.

Public Speaking Tips and Tricks | Choose Your Topic

Let me tell you about Alex. Alex is one of my clients and he has a speech problem. He stutters. Now if you’re a public speaker, that’s a no-no, right? Well, that’s not the rule. In fact, Alex created a very profitable program with his struggle, and his testimony remains one of my favorite success stories in my career.

I have here three very simple but highly effective public speaking tips and tricks you can use in your next seminar and workshop. Then, you can be just as successful as Alex.

1. Start with What You Know

Start With What You Know | Public Speaking Tips And Tricks | How To Pick A Topic For Your Next Seminar

When you want to step up to the stage and make a real difference in the world, it can be difficult to know just where to begin. “Should I talk about my program?” “Which specific part of the program should I discuss?” “What topics will appeal to the audience?”

With all these questions, it’s easy to get lost. That’s why one of my public speaking tips and tricks is to start with what you know. Your best topic is one that has a strong connection to your personal journey.

What experiences or knowledge have you gained in your life that can add value to other people?

If you’re not sure, take a moment to look at your own life. A technique is to remember your Pit, an experience that was so challenging that you didn’t know if you could get through it.

Use your own story of vulnerability, breakthrough, and transformation to help create transformation in others’ lives!

2. Empower and Educate Your Audience

One of the biggest mistakes public speakers make is to revolve their talk around one person: themselves. It’s all about me, me, and me. The huge issue with this one is your audience cannot relate to you.

Your topic is not about you. It’s about your audience, who came to your seminar or workshop wanting some form of transformation, inspiration, and motivation.

People want to be empowered by you. They want to be educated and learn from you. They want you to help them live a better life.

Here’s an example. Let’s say you’re in financial services, and you sell financial products for a living. You can empower people with your knowledge by teaching them how to become financially free on their own terms and lead a better life as a result.

How can you empower your audience to live a better life?

3. Stand Up as a Leader

The last of my public speaking tips and tricks is for you to show up and serve.

Now you know what your topic is, you have to get out there and start speaking! The best way to become an accomplished workshop or seminar leader is to get out there and do it — even if you feel you’re six months away from mastering your topic.

You won’t master it by staying at home and practicing speaking to yourself. You learn it by teaching other people.

Here are more tips to help you build a powerful message so you can get those high-paying clients:

Now you know my public speaking tips and tricks, I leave you with one challenge: pick a topic today and set a date for your first workshop or seminar within the next 120 days, then let me know your progress.
